Ordinary People (E E Montgomery)

Ordinary People - E E Montgomery

Shorter stories can be tricky to satisfy you fully; and I think this is the downside of “ Ordinary People ”. It has a good premise that intrigues me: Vinnie finds himself on top of a dead man, he’s naked, and he’s clearly been heavily intoxicated – what happened to him? That is the mystery and I found myself quite enjoying that part.

Unfortunately, the rest, especially the romance, was a bit silly and not fulfilling. There is this sense of surreal fairy-tale-like to it – like when you’re watching one of those indie movies, Stranger than Fiction or the more recent The Secret Life of Walter Mitty – the one where the MC is daydreaming, or fantasizing about True Love, or having some sort of third party narrator talking to readers about what has been happening to the characters. We just have to believe that because Vinnie vomits all over James’s shoes and look into James’s eyes then it is True Love. It is probably a different experience between watching in visual-like (in movies) and reading it on page. For me, there isn’t enough relationship-build that can make me believe in it.

At least Vinnie’s narration when he is drugged is quite entertaining – and for me that is another one that can still make this story falls into my 3-stars category. Other than that, I’m not wholeheartedly impressed.
