In this latest Bosch novel, Harry Bosch entered his final year at the LAPD Open-Unsolved Unit as part of his Deferred Retirement Option Plan. He plans to do it right ... and probably become a good mentor to his new partner, a rookie detective, Lucia Soto. They catch a case that started almost a decade ago, with a Mexican folk musician being shot, and only died recently. The cops never caught the shooter.
As always, I thought the story was SOLID. Through a very well-investigation between Bosch and Soto, the detectives find that there are other cases directly linked to the shooting. That the victim might not exactly be the targeted person. And that Soto's childhood tragedy might be part of a larger scale plan, which involved grand-scale robbery, love affair, jealous husband, and political cover-up.
It was really good. I have read this series for over a decade and every time, I am easily engrossed with Harry Bosch and his cases. Considering that this is the final year of Bosch's DROP program, this book ends with a sort of "open" ending for Bosch's future. I don't know where Connelly will take Bosch after this -- considering that Connelly tried giving Bosch a career in private investigation sector before and it didn't really work. So, I don't know what he will do. But if there are more books about Bosch, you can be sure that I will be reading it.
