To Read is To Live

Dawn of Darkness - Daniel A. Kaine My reaction I got to the end ... "GOD DAMN IT, I SHOULD'VE BOUGHT THIS BOOK WHEN BOOK 2 IS ALREADY AVAILABLE!!!"Yeah, because while one big plot is finished, there is another kind of 'cliff hanger' regarding one of the characters, which makes me dying to read book #2 right away. Okay, my opinion will have some spoilers and retelling the plot because it helps me to remember what the story is all about (I have short term memory capacity)What the plot is all about: HUGE SPOILER The story pretty much opens with Mikhail and his Daeva team members. Daeva are gifted human, human with abilities (think of X-Men). Mikhail can manipulate emotion, his best friend (and later become the object of his affection), Ash, is an empath and creates ice. There are also their other friends, Lucas, Brad, and Katiya. The Daeva soldiers fight against vampires. But during one of the mission, Mik encounters a vampire that seems to have similar power with him, and he starts to question where Daeva's ability is originated. Turns out that this is a big secret among the Daeva community. Mik is pretty much 'removed'. He finds another set of friends in the dark, when he learns truth about what is going on. That not all vampires are bad. In fact, about 2/3 of the book, Mik becomes part of Twilight Resistance, a rebellion group that consist of a female vampire (Violet), the human lover of the vampire (Sebastian), wolf-shifter (Daniel), and another Daeva with control over fire (Nate). Then the Twilight Resistance members prepare to launch their attack, it turns out there is a traitor among them, which results in casualtiesI don't discover much dystopian/paranormal story in male/male genre, so I totally welcome this. Especially with a gay male protagonist. That is one huge plus. The writing is SMOOTH, and unlike a couple of YA mainstreams I read, this is not just about a boy pining for another boy. Yes, there is sexual/romance element, but this is not just that. There's friendship (between Mik and the Twilight Resistance members, I especially adore his and Daniel) and mystery (about the real bad guy) and thrill and action. The world building is captivating -- and it is easy to read, without some flowery words that usually come in urban fantasy/paranormal genre. Characters wise are also well-written. I come to love these people (except when I find out who the traitor is, DAMN YOU!) and when the cliffhanger happens (So does this mean that Ash is now a vampire?!?) I just want to scream and demand book 2 to be released now.WELL-DONE, Mr. Kaine!! Especially to think that this is your first novel. Hats-off.
