Killing Rites (The Black Sun's Daughter #4) - M.L.N. Hanover 4.5 starsStoryline is put under spoiler tag, for my personal purpose:In the aftermath from book #3, where Jayné and the rest of her little family (Ex, Aubrey, and Choygi Jake) discovered what Eric has done, in matters of manipulating Aubrey and Kim, the family is now 'broken'. Aubrey and Kim stay in Chicago. Choygi Jake as well, since he's still recuperating. Jayné and Ex are moving out the country, after Jayné is forced to bury an innocent man alive, to trap an evil that haunts the hospital where Kim works. Jayné discovers she has a rider inside her -- a rider that helps Jayné wins her fights againts other riders. So Jayné and Ex, go to Ex's former teacher and his priest friends, to help get rid of Jayné's rider. However, things are not as straightforward as it seems. Jayné's rider is unlike other riders. So Jayné must decide whether she should keep it and make a truce with her situation, or notAAARGH!!! I need the next book!!! *wails* This is definitely the best one yet in the series, and I definitely have this series as one of my favorites. Most especially because in this one, mystery is revealed, self-power is discovered, and while there is reduction on Jayné's band of friends, the focus instead switched to Jayné's self-discovery, plus introduction of new characters (whom I wish can still appear in the next book). There's action, angst, and a whole lotta awesomeness. The story here is more, uhm, personally-focused. I mean, in the previous three books, Jayné is always with her friends. This time, she only has Ex -- and when things don't go as planned, Jayné must deal with the rider issue by herself. I totally enjoy this, because it gives a new perception about Jayné. Her character is advancedly (spell?) developed. I love how she talks to her rider, I love how she make decisions about it, and takes control of things.I also enjoy the closeness of her and Ex. While it doesn't translate into physical and/or sexual thing, but I admit that I've been championing Ex more than Aubrey. Since Aubrey is (temporarily) is out of the picture in this book, I welcome this 'open' possibility of Jayné and Ex. The only one I do miss is Choygi Jake. For me, Choygi Jake is like Jayné's older Zen brother. He always helps Jayné to see things differently, to put things in perspective, and I miss him dearly. Although there is one character reappeared (Midian, the vampire!!) but he doesn't stay long. Oh, but Jayné gets herself a dog, named Ozzie though :)Now that Jayné knows who the rider inside herself is, I can't wait to see what will happen next. Especially the way the story ends with Jayné calling her mother, I think we will know more about Jayné's history and why Eric was fighting the fight.
