Ami's Hoard

To Read is To Live

Highborn - Yvonne Navarro I love how this book feels different than other urban fantasy that I have read. Brynna Malak, the heroine is a fallen angel (which means that she's a demon), who is just trying to get her redemption and running from Lucifer's Hunters who are determined to drag her to Hell. There is a sense of detachment in Brynna, which "refreshingly" I love. Even when she is starting to feel guilt, or wanting to protect the Nephilims that she encounters, or starting to feel the attraction to the Detective Redmond, I don't feel her as engaged to the human life. The story is quite fast-paced without confusing technical jargons. There isn't complicated myth or world building, simply a fallen angel on the road to redemption, who meets a human detective who is attracted to her along the way. There is no strong lust or hot sex (the lovemaking is done off screen) even. But I definitely want to know what happens to Brynna next. Besides, anything with angels and demons always strike my interest. Plus the cover for book #2 is so much prettier than this one (Brynna has wings!)
