To Read is To Live

That Good Earth - S.A. Meade Second Lieutenant Arthur Reed from Royal Flying Corps met Lieutenant William McCall when they both took shelter in a hole in a mud. After they were rescued, they were back to their respective squadron, though they kept contact by letters (and also being very careful in their words due to censorship at that time)...-------------------------Although I am familiar with S.A. Maede's stories before, I didn't immediately jumped into reading this one. The reason? Historical. Never is my favorite genre, even if this one is set post 1900's (it's during World War I). Well, I'm glad that I finally did. Like Elizabetta said, this was a gentle love story between two soldiers during WW1. I loved how they kept contact by letters (it was an art form that get eroded fast now with short text messages). At one point, the story made me all teary eyed.I know that the two men connected really fast, considering they practically only shared one night together in a crater (they only shared kiss that night); but it was an intense situation, amidst threats to their lives. It felt believable to me. I also loved how the story ended -- it felt just right. And the writing? Subtle. Gorgeous.PS: I loved this quote, but since it would give you idea about the ending, I just put it under spoiler tag, yes?"Will you come and live with me, Arthur? Will you tend that good earth with me? I have nothing to hide from you. No one from my past, there has never been anyone. Only you.”
