Monsters Under The Bed (Susan Laine)

Monsters under the Bed - Susan Laine

3.5 stars

I didn't read the other books in the series but I felt that this worked nicely as a stand-alone. There might be stuffs I was missing regarding the "Great Unveiling" moment but I didn't think it would ruin one's reading experience.

There were a number of things I enjoyed -- first and foremost was that this story emphasized on the mystery and investigation. Sam Garrett, who worked as a P.I. after he quit the PD, was hired by a dead eccentric teenage billionaire genius, Mozart "Mo" Chance, to investigate Mo's own death. In his letter to Sam, Mo said that there was no way he would die because of a suicide. So he told Sam to find out who killed him.

It was a great set-up. I always have a soft heart for it and I can trade romance for a good murder-mystery. Since Sam was already in an established relationship for the past 5-years, the story really focused on Sam finding out who was responsible. Oh, we still had those intimate moments between Sam and Rex, kisses and sex, but the romance took the back-seat. Especially because Sam and Rex were quite solid.

Now ... I wasn't sure about the paranormal aspect. At times I thought this could be a smashing mystery instead without the 'weird' stuffs. I actually could picture this story without ANY of the mystical / supernatural creature. I thought the story would still be smashingly good (even if the villain was quite easy to figure out *LOL*).

HOWEVER, at other times I thought the paranormal aspect actually enhanced the story. Because there was quite a huge twist near the end, which made me go "WOW, I didn't see THAT coming!"

So, I was a bit ambivalent about the paranormal element. However, in overall, I really liked this.
