Jill Shalvis has become one of my comfort-blanket authors. Duly noted, I only followed her
Lucky Harbor series so far (all 12.5 titles of them!), but I find that I love her stories and her characters. They are so endearing and I love being with them.
Animal Magnetism is a series that I want to start following. I actually read the first book in this series but I disliked it, so I didn’t pay any attention to the follow-up books until
Then Came You (book #5). In that book, I was so very much intrigued with Darcy and AJ – I sensed a story between them and I couldn’t wait to read it.
Well, let me say that this is another winner by Ms. Shalvis!
Darcy is good at pushing people away – she has deep trust issues, being familiar with rejection rooting from her parents’ way of treating her since she was younger. So, of course, when AJ turned her down – three months after her accident that put her in a wheelchair and when she was really needy – Darcy doesn’t take it well. She tries her best to make AJ crazy, because he makes her crazy. Now, AJ is not exactly immune to Darcy, but she is his best friend’s younger sister. And he does care for Darcy more than anyone else and even if she seems to hate his guts.
I was captivated by the push-pull between Darcy and AJ. I knew there was something more to these two since I read about them in Wyatt’s book. I find that I can be such a sucker for this kind of relationship too, the one that explores emotional conflicts while at the same time offering undeniable sexual tension. And boy, the sexual tension here is so thick and delicious.
Darcy can be difficult and prickly – but it is clear that everything she does, keeping people at arm’s length, is the only way she knows how to protect herself from pain and heartbreak. And Darcy knows rejection coming from AJ will be the hardest for her because she can easily lose her heart to him.
While AJ … oh, AJ, such a perfect book-boyfriend. There is no doubt that AJ will always put Darcy first. I was rooting so badly for these two because I knew that AJ would be very good for Darcy – I mean, Darcy could only sleep with AJ on her side! He keeps her nightmares at bay just by being there for her *le sigh*.
I would love to see more scenes with AJ’s father though … there was good potential for father-son strain there. It was the only thing missing, I think, which would make this story more rounded.
Now I can’t wait for Zoe’s story – the last of the Stone siblings – in October.
