The One You Want (Gena Showalter)

The One You Want (Original Heartbreakers) - Gena Showalter

2.5 stars

I was quite intrigued with the upcoming start of "The Original Heartbreaker" series from Gena Showalter. Since my only experience with her was almost 5 years ago (and I only gave that book 2-stars rating) I thought maybe I should give this novella a try because 1) it was a Kindle freebie and 2) it seems to be the prequel. Now, this being a novella I'm quite ready to be bombarded with instant-attraction or instant-love -- mainly because novella-length limitation. I've been known to still like stories with those as long as I can enjoy the plot and care about the characters.

But OMG the characters here were HORRIBLE!! I tried to find something decent to say about the main hero and heroine -- and I truly couldn't find one.

The hero is a rich playboy with constant string of 'bitchy and mean type' of women on his side, who apparently has issues because his father has been cheating on his mom for years, with the mother of the heroine no less. Then suddenly he sees this new step-sister of her growing up (because his father decides to divorce his mother after all, and then marries his mistress after his mistress's husband died -- GAH!) and he suddenly feels lust and caveman around her. But he's also a dick to her and her innocent child, because you know, tragedy in his childhood with his real brother. Then the resolution is so quick -- I'll buy you house, and puppy for your daughter, and I bring you carriage because you're my princess *vomit*. I want to tenderize him like a steak meat.

Although the heroine is NO better!! You know, she is the misunderstood girl, people always sees her as the daughter of her adulteress mother. She has a six year old daughter, a result of one night she was drunk and ended up in bed with three guys. But she is so forgiving and she wants to keep her image as a good girl and she learns to be an elementary teacher. She is attracted to this rich boy because her heart is the gentlest kind and she sees him more than just a playboy. But she doesn't want to be just another notch on her bed post. But she really is attracted to him. AND because "I'm the good girl, but I'm attracted to you, let's start our first sex without a condom because I'm clean and I'm on a pill" ... and URGH! I need to stop. I couldn't feel connected to her, so many freakin' contradictions!! Not to mention that her inner musing using hashtag Twitter was SO ANNOYING.

Don't let me get started with their supposedly romance too. It was uninspiring in an over-the-top drama kind of thing.

I didn't give out rating below 2* rating as principle (only those books I truly hate got those). I didn't hate this, but I didn't like it as well. I did finish this book and I didn't exactly skimming it (I often did that with my 2* rating). In addition, there was one light at the end of the tunnel. I was quite intrigued with one of the secondary characters, the best friend of the hero, and he's the reason for my extra 0.5*. Unfortunately, his book is not until #3. So I'm rather ambivalent about continuing. I guess for now, I'll take that title off my TBR and just wait for more thoughts pouring in.
